Cape Canaveral SFS

United States · 28.49° N, 80.57° W

The busiest launch site on Earth. This US Space Force station on Florida's Atlantic coast flies most Falcon 9 missions from SLC-40, Atlas V and Vulcan from SLC-41 and New Glenn from LC-36, and has been active since 1950.

Kennedy Space Center

United States · 28.61° N, 80.60° W

NASA's historic Florida spaceport. Pad 39A, used for Apollo and the Space Shuttle, is leased by SpaceX for crewed Dragon and Falcon Heavy launches; a Starship pad is under construction.

Vandenberg SFB

United States · 34.74° N, 120.57° W

US west-coast Space Force base in California. Its geography allows launches straight south into polar and sun-synchronous orbits. Starlink polar shells and many Earth-observation missions fly from here.

Starbase

SpaceX's own spaceport and factory at Boca Chica, Texas, home of the fully reusable Starship/Super Heavy. Roads are closed before each test; the site is being expanded for orbital flights.

NASA Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia, home to the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport (MARS). Launches Antares/Cygnus cargo missions to the ISS and Rocket Lab's US Electron flights.

Pacific Spaceport Complex on Kodiak Island, Alaska: a commercial pad for small polar launches (Astra, ABL) and suborbital missile tests, run by Alaska Aerospace.

The world's first and largest spaceport, in the Kazakh steppe, leased by Russia. Sputnik, Gagarin and every crewed Soyuz to the ISS launched here since 1957.

Plesetsk

Russia's northern military cosmodrome, south of Arkhangelsk. The world's busiest launch site during the Cold War; today it flies Soyuz and Angara for military and polar missions.

Vostochny

Russia's newest cosmodrome in the far-eastern Amur region, opened 2016 to reduce dependence on Baikonur. Launches Soyuz-2 and, increasingly, Angara rockets.

Historic Russian missile and rocket range near the Volga, active since 1947. Used for small satellite launches and military test flights.

LAUNCH SITES, EXPLAINED

Why do so many rockets launch from Florida?

Two reasons, and both are geography. The closer a pad sits to the equator, the more speed a rocket gets for free from the rotation of the Earth, which means more payload for the same vehicle. And a pad on an east coast can fly east over open ocean, so nothing falls on anyone if a flight goes wrong. Cape Canaveral and Kennedy Space Center have both, which is why the United States put its main range there in the 1950s and why most Falcon 9 flights still start from that stretch of coast.

Why does Vandenberg launch to the south instead?

Because it is aiming at a different kind of orbit. Polar and sun-synchronous orbits pass over both poles, so a rocket has to fly north or south rather than east. From the Californian coast a rocket can fly straight south over the Pacific without crossing populated land. That is the whole reason a second American range exists on the west coast, and it is why Earth-observation and radar satellites lift off from Vandenberg rather than Florida.

What is a sea launch platform?

A converted ship or barge that carries the rocket out to sea and launches it there. It buys the same advantage as an equatorial site without needing land: the platform can be moved to the latitude that suits the target orbit, and the drop zones are open water. China operates this way from Haiyang on the Shandong coast, and such launches appear in the data under the port, not under a fixed pad.

Which sites can the public visit?

That differs from site to site, and it changes. Some ranges are active military bases with no public access at all, some have a visitor complex with paid tickets, and some allow viewing only from public roads and beaches nearby. T-Rocket does not publish visiting advice it has not verified against the operator, so check the official site of the operator before travelling.
