The record also contains flights by private Indian operators alongside ISRO, which makes Sriharikota one of the few sites on this map where a national agency and a commercial newcomer share the same ground.
Yes, and this is the one site on this list where the operator runs a public viewing gallery itself and charges nothing for it. That makes Sriharikota unusual: at the American sites, the closest views are either commercial tickets or public roads, not a facility the space agency built for spectators.
SDSC SHAR states plainly that it does not charge visitors anything to watch a launch from the launch view gallery, and that it is entirely free of cost. The gallery was inaugurated on 31 March 2019. The centre notes that the gallery is currently open to the public while other facilities are still being prepared.
Registration runs through the centre's own portal. SDSC SHAR asks visitors to have a government-issued identity document ready, naming an Aadhaar card or a driving licence as examples, together with a mobile number and an email address. For the same two reasons that put the American pads on the Florida coast, applied to the other side of the world. Sriharikota is a barrier island on the east coast, so east of the pads there is open Bay of Bengal: spent stages and any failure fall into water rather than onto people. And at roughly 13 degrees north the site sits closer to the equator than any American launch site, which means a rocket launched eastward gains more free speed from the rotation of the Earth. On that measure Sriharikota has a better hand than Cape Canaveral.
Size and job. The PSLV is the medium workhorse and has flown the majority of Indian missions, including planetary ones; it appears in several variants that differ mainly in the number of strap-on boosters. The GSLV Mk II is heavier and was built to place communications satellites into high orbits. LVM3, still widely called GSLV Mk III, is the heavy vehicle and the one rated for the crewed programme. The SSLV is the newest and smallest, aimed at single small satellites.
NET is short for no earlier than. It is the earliest moment a launch can happen, not a promise. A launch can slip later by minutes or by months, and it will never lift off before the time shown. The status tells you how firm the date is: GO means confirmed for the listed time, TBC means the date is to be confirmed, TBD means it is still to be determined.
